GROUSE SHOOTING STARTS AUGUST 12TH

Counts Collobiano and Corsini looking forward to the start of the grouse season at Dorback on 12 August
CKD GALBRAITH STATES DEMAND REMAINS STRONG FOR GROUSE SHOOTING
Demand remains strong for this year’s grouse shooting and predicts grouse numbers will be up in many areas of Scotland, with grouse counts better than in recent years.
“Bookings have been good this year despite the economic climate, with the price of driven grouse shooting holding up well between £130 and £150 per brace.
“The supply of driven grouse shooting continues to be confined to core areas in Scotland, and we find that, wherever possible, experienced parties are looking to take some of their driven grouse shooting in Scotland as they hugely value the sporting qualities of our Scottish grouse, which remain good value compared to many moors in the north of England.
“The Scottish moors which have grouse should have a good season this year, and weather conditions over the critical period of the last few months have been excellent.
“We continue to receive daily enquiries particularly for walked up shooting, and although we are well booked, more days may become available as we get into the season and stocks can be fully assessed.”
We still have driven days available. Please contact us if you are interested.

SAVE OUR WILD SCOTTISH SALMON
The Salmon and Trout Assoc have launched a petition to demand that the Scottish Government relocate some west coast salmon farms from the migratory routes of wild salmon and sea trout.
Please, SIGN THIS PETITION – it will take less than a minute of your time and you can do so online by clicking the following link: http://www.salmon-trout.org/save_petition.asp
Veteran Inverlochy AC angler Sandy Walker was lucky enough to catch salmon of 16lbs, 13lbs, and 12lbs from the river Lochy during the month of June, but nothing compared to the fresh run 32 pounder he caught from the Tailrace whitewater on the tidal beat of the Lochy on Monday 29 June. He hooked the fish on an inch and a half Waddington, and it took him one and a half hours to land it in the Larder Pool, some 500 yards downstream.
The fish was weighed and witnessed by Fishery manager Jon Gibb, who said “it looked all of its 32 pounds and was probably the most stunning fish I have ever seen landed from the river” . The fish was safely returned to the river, and has been entered for the Malloch Trophy, which will be awarded to the captor of the largest wild fly caught salmon from a Scottish river, and safely returned each season.

Mid season Review
As we approach the mid point of the year, it is a useful time to take stock of the season so far, and also look forward to the next 6 months.
The spring fishing in Scotland has not been as good as we had hoped, and certainly not as good as last year. Widespread low water conditions haven’t helped . As a result the Association of salmon Fishery Boards called for restraint from all River Boards, and recommended 100% catch & release for the spring period. Looking forward to the summer months, we are hearing reports of the first grilse now starting to filter into the systems, and we just hope that we get some good water, and a healthy influx of grilse to make up for the lean spring. There is still some excellent summer fishing available, and we shall be keeping you up to date as to what is available.

Dr Michael Simpkiss playing a fresh 7 pounder Syre Pool, river Naver, early June 2009
It is still early days to be making predictions as to how the grouse will fare in Scotland this year, but there is an air of cautious optimism that the cold winter coupled with the fair spring weather should have produced the most favourable breeding and hatching conditions for a number of years, and we shall just have to wait and see how the broods have coped. We should be in a much better position to know by the end of the month. The fine weather of the last two weeks has been ideal, but has followed some very cold weather and periods of heavy rain, particularly on the high ground. Fingers firmly crossed! In addition to Scotland, we are likely to have some good deals in the North of England. Please enquire if you are interested.

A Mixed sporting week holiday coupled with the estate lodge is still considered by many to be the best sort of family holiday. Eminently affordable, it offers the estate and all that it has to offer, as your personal playground for a whole week. It is an ideal opportunity to introduce the younger members of the family to fishing shooting and stalking, and many “firsts” are recorded during these weeks. We would be very pleased to hear from anyone who has a member of their party with a first – whether it be a trout, salmon, grouse, or stag, and we would be delighted to publish their picture on these pages. We still have a number of very good weeks still available. Check our website for full details, or give us a ring. We’d be very pleased to hear from you.

Scotland’s most prestigious angling trophy is relaunched.
We look forward to receiving entries for the prestigious Savills Malloch Trophy, which will be awarded to the captor of the largest wild Atlantic salmon caught on the fly in a Scottish river, and safely released.
The trophy was previously awarded between 1972 and 1999, and we are hoping to compile a record of the capture of all those fish. If you were one of the winners, or know someone who was, we would be very interested to receive a short story detailing its capture including the beat it was caught on, the tackle used and any other interesting information of the day. Any information would be gratefully received |
Sea Trout in Loch Hope
The Press & Journal reports that 2008 sea trout catches in Loch Hope, Sutherland, show an encouraging increase over the numbers of fish taken during 2007. The 2007 season produced 755 fish while in 2008 the number caught was 803, up by 6.4%. More than 50% of these fish were returned.
Sea trout catches on the loch have been remarkably consistent for the past 40 years. According to statistics produced by the riparian owners, the 20 year average, from 1964 to 1983, was 757. From 1984 to 1993 the average dropped to 707, but then rose again to 759 for the 10 years to 2004. As the 2009 season starts, the present 10 year average stands at 710.
