We're looking forward to seeing you on our stand at Scone this year

The weather seems to have well and truly broken over last weekend, and the North and West are breathing a sigh of relief with the first water for nearly three months. The first of the grilse are also starting to show, and we look forward to hearing reports from our Northern rivers from this last week

Peter Ellis with a lovely sealiced ten pounder from Wester Elchies on the Spey, caught on a home tied cascade style fly. Wednesday, 25 June 2008

Kercock on the river Tay hit a purple patch this morning  - Monday 16 June, with Andrew Robertson landing three fish from the Dowie Burn in his first hour of fishing. His fish which were all fresh-run weighed 8, 17and an estimated 30 pounds, and were caught on a small tube fished on a sinktip line.

Malcolm Arrowsmith and friends had a very successful family fishing week at Kinlochewe at the end of May, landing nine salmon and lots of brownies including one Ferox trout of nearly five pounds from Loch Maree. Their catch included two “first salmon” for his daughter Fredericka, and friend Georgie McCreedy.

Despite the hot and dry weather, fish are still coming off our beats on the Tay. Christian Peifer was delighted to catch two on the fly at Kercock on Saturday 31 May.

And safely returned

June is always considered to be one of the prime months for some of the best of our wild Brown Trout fishing. A huge fish of around 15 pounds was caught last week on Loch Damph, and Loch Heilan produced this fabulous fish to a size 10 Golden Olive Bumble

The two beats including Darren's Spencer's party had a cracking week at Dounie on the Carron 27 April to 4 May with 8 Springers for the week between eight and sixteen pounds, with a further fish lost.

Trophy Wild Brown Trout Fishing in Wester Ross

Loch Damph in Wester Ross provides some of the very best trophy wild brown trout fishing in Scotland. Most of the fishing is on the drift in traditional loch style fishing small traditional wet fly patterns. Huge Brownies are regularly being caught, with the best to date a fifteen pounder on a size 14 wet fly. These big fish take near the surface often close to the boat – real heart in the mouth stuff. Fishing on Loch Damph is available through either the New Lodge, Ben Damph, or the Thraill House, which both have boats on the loch. See “Late Availability” for available dates this season.

An eight pounder on a size 10 Butcher

The Morrison party had a successful week on the river Lyon , staying at Chesthill House 20-27 April. The party caught five springers between 7 and 20 pounds, including one guest's first two salmon ever , including the twenty pounder, which was safely returned to the river. This week has produced one fish already for Chesthill.

John Ives party had a successful week at Cornhill on the river Carron 14-19 April, with a total of 8 springers up to 14 pounds to their two rods, the best fly being the Collie Dog

The Kercock beat on the river Tay is fishing away steadily with a tally of 23 fish to date, well above the five year average. This attractive beat has two ghillies, and includes some lovely fly water. We would like to congratulate all those who have fished this season in returning 100% of the fish caught to date – all 23 springers have been successfully returned to the river. A shining example for the Tay.  Daily rods available at £47 per rod per day. A great opportunity to catch a springer!

A lovely 15 pounder about to be released by Gareth Craze. Caught on a fly from Upper Boatlands

The North bank of the Lower River Brora has had a successful April so far. David Raper's two rods had 8 fish between 5 & 10 lbs on a mix of Ally's shrimps, Willy Gunns and Sunray Shadows, whilst Lord Cadogan's party also had 8 during their fishing, again between 5 & 10 lbs.

Two April Brora springers

Stuart Gray's party on the Naver at Syre had a good April week with 14 springers to their rods, between 6 and 20lbs.

Cornhill on the Carron is one of the river's top performing beats so far this year. It is a very pretty two rod beat offering some wonderful fly water. The Wilson party landed 9 fish to their two rods in the week 31 March to 5 April, best fish 12 pounds from the Gledfield Pool on a two inch red/yellow tube.

A 27 pounder from the river Tay at Stobhall. This year has seen a number of big spring fish from the Tay up to 30 pounds

Thursday 27 March. A fish estimated at 34 pounds plus was caught and released from the Potato Park Pool Beat 6 of the River Naver. Syre rod, Dr Mike Edwards landed the fish after a two hour battle. The fish was a magnificent sealiced cock springer, and took a 2 inch Willy Gunn tube. This could possibly be a record for the river

First fish off the Naver 5 pounder from the Black Bank, Beat 5 to Malcolm Fisher. River off the gauge

The Salmon fishing season is now well and truly open with this lovely sealiced six pounder from the Lower River Brora. It was caught by Brian Stubbs from the Upper Fannich on Friday 8th February at 1045am on a Green Highlander.

High water seems to have dogged the start of the season on many rivers. The Tay has been running consistently high to unfishable. Both Dalguise and Kercock are still looking for their first fish. As soon as the water settles, there should be a very good chance, with rods available from £22 per rod per day.

Both Tweed and Dee have got off to a good start. Our Dee beats include Woodend and Knappach.

We still have good opportunities this season, particularly early season on the Carron at Dounie – please have a look at our Late Availability for our regular Friday update.

The first salmon of the season on Tweed was caught on February the 5th at 4.00pm; it was caught by Lee Craig, ghillie from Carham. Lee was fishing on the Carham beat when the 13lbs hen fish was caught from the Long Stream pool. The fresh springer was caught on a Junction Shrimp fly using a Guideline sink2/sink3 shooting head line. Prior to releasing the fish, Lee took a scale sample which Ronald Campbell, the Tweed Foundation Biologist, confirmed it to be a spring fish. It was also confirmed that the fish had spent three winters at sea. The Tweedside Trophy was commissioned last season by Tweedside Tackle by the locally renowned artist Jason Sweeney and was presented to Lee on Wednesday night. The trophy is made from stainless steel and will remain on show in the shop for all to see. Lee’s name will be the second name to be added to the plaque, following that of Bob Miller who was the winner last year.

A fish was reportedly caught on February the 4th at Upper Mertoun, by Craig Burmann-Duke, but unfortunately, Craig was unable to produce a photograph of the fish – a stipulation of the trophy rules and a requirement to authenticate the catch …. no doubt Craig will carry a camera in future!

Tweedside Tackle intend to follow in the tradition next year of other Scottish rivers with an opening day ceremony to bless the river.
