The Cortachy fishings on the River South Esk lie immediately upstream of Sheilhill Bridge near Kirriemuir, and extend for three miles of nearly all double bank fishing, for a maximum of 6 rods. The fishings are divided into two beats of three rods each, rotating daily.
The lower beat, Downie Park, is approximately one mile in length with 14 named pools. It is a good holding beat, with good access throughout, and includes the upper, middle and lower Kaimbridge pools and the Carity Moo.
The upper beat, formerly the Riverwalk, Castle and Meeting beat is approximately two miles in length with over 20 named pools, and includes the famous meetings pool at the confluence with the Prosen, and the Downie Park Stream.
The South Esk is renowned for its sea trout fishing, the best months being June and July. The Cortachy Fishings have recently enjoyed excellent summer seatrouting with over 150 seatrout for the month of July. The quality of these seatrout is second to none, with a number of fish in excess of 5lbs caught each season.
There are also good run of salmon and grilse with the best months being April, May, September and October, the fishing ending on 31st October each year. The best salmon in 2011 was 28lbs caught in early October, the second fish of over 20lbs to be caught during that week.
There is a full time ghillie, and a well appointed fishing hut on each beat. Fishing is by fly only.
